Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Tour de Cure in Lake Nona, Florida has been postponed and moved to the new date of June 13, 2020.

Unfortunately, there is another epidemic going on in this country that will be with us long after the COVID-19 pandemic is over and will affect many more lives. That epidemic is Diabetes. To find out more on the risks coronavirus presents to diabetics, please visit the ADA’s COVID-19 HUB for the latest information and resources: https://www.diabetes.org/coronavirus-covid-19. That’s why TeamOne can’t just wait until next year to raise funds for this important cause. A NEW APPROACH – VIRTUAL!

Fortunately, bicycling is one of the approved activities during social distancing, as long as it isn’t in a large group. As such, on Saturday a few TeamOne members (Chet, Diana, Jodel, Jonathan, and Z) gathered early to kick off the day. The team members’ enthusiasm was high but there were a lot of things missing. Some of the few things missing were: the other team members who could not be there in person, the great volunteers, the event’s usually brilliant array of sights and sounds, the tents which would be lined up displaying all sorts of swag, the ever-popular Breakfast Cafe with its breakfast sandwiches, bagels, cream cheese, fruit, orange juice, and coffee that made everyone feel right at home.

The forecast for this virtual event was sunny and hot, in the ’80s with winds up to 10 mph. Mother Nature did not disappoint. The wonderful ADA Leaders used social media to generate interest. On this big day, they hosted a virtual start at 8 am with the Lake Nona virtual tour Facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/tdcorlando, and #VirtualTourdeCure2020, so all participants could keep in touch.

The Ride

This year TeamOne had one group of riders participating in a 36-mile impromptu course. Lined up for a photo op at the starting line, the cyclists displayed pride, readiness, and excitement. Every year has a different synergy depending on the participants. One thing that does not change, though, is the bond shared by a group ready to fight the wind and successfully master the ride!

After a warm-up of 13 mph, the riders soon picked up to their targeted pace of 18 mph. The absence of the Volunteers not greeting the group as they went through the course was a very different feeling. The day was starting to go from warm to hot. The team members’ hydration and snacks were limited to what they carried with them!

On or about the 20-mile mark while at the rest stop they attempted to perform a live streaming interview with the ADA team but had trouble with connectivity. After 10 minutes of trying to go live the Team recorded a video and transferred it to the ADA team to play at a later time so they can get back on the road. The team got back to the ride and the first 5 miles started to pass quickly. The wind took note and started to pick up just to provide a good workout. Mother nature was going to provide a training partner for the team to help with the team’s workout. They would like to say that the next couple of miles passed quickly but they could not. 🙂 Traveling the last 8 miles into the headwind of 8 mph the team finishes the 36-miles feeling an enormous amount of pride.
