Finally, it is the Tour de Cure (TdC) Lake Nona 2017! It has been an incredible wait, quite a bit of training and recruiting of new members, and “fun-raising”.
The day started off early, as in, 5:00 am early. There was tent setup and making sure everyone was checked in for registration. Some riders were renting bikes for the day, so the bike pick-up had to be completed early, too. Volunteers were there with wonderful smiles! The volunteers make such a difference to a great day. This event could not be held without them.
Breakfast was ready and waiting. Oranges, bananas, bagels, yogurt, coffee – a great way to greet the day under any circumstances, but especially welcome in preparing for the long rides today. The forecast was sunny and warm, in the 70’s with winds up to 10 mph – comments could be heard that this is perfect weather for a ride.
The Ride
TeamOne had two groups of riders today participating in 25 and 50-mile courses. 7:30 am was the start time for the 50, 63, and 100-mile riders. The riders made their way to the starting line. This group consisted of 6 team members.
We proceeded with the team’s rituals … First step: sync up the computers. Second Step: make sure gloves are on. Third step: check helmets. Fourth and final step: sync up the music from DJ Lobel’s SoundCloud. Ready to ride! Once the start signal was given, the team made their way, along with many other cyclists. Finally, they reached a point where they were not in a pack and could open up the ride to a more sustainable speed of 18-20 mph. This group of TeamOne cyclists switched the lead (pull) position. 50 miles is quite a way to go even though the wind was only 10 mph, they used this switching technique the entire ride so no one burned out before the end.
At the first SAG station stop the riders took advantage of, once again the cheery volunteers greeted the team. Smiles everywhere and the welcome hydration and refreshments were right on time. At the second stop, more warm smiles from Volunteers greeted the riders (who were just a little more tired by now). After each SAG stop, the cyclists got underway, with a bit of wind, and a lot of sunshine! One thing that was not the norm for this day was that one of the team members was recovering from the flu. He still rode and pulled — no way was he going to miss out on this ride he said!
8:30 am was the 25-miles ride start time. The TeamOne members made their way to the starting line. This TeamOne group of cyclists were excited and ready! Several newcomers to the team joined the veterans for a wonderful ride in perfect weather. Bill, Deborah (Deb), Gail, Kevin, and Terry showed up ready to ride. These newcomers were amazing. Not only have they worked hard to become Champions, they came prepared to ride and have fun. The 25-mile course took them through some tree-lined neighborhoods, scenic routes, and provided for an incredible experience. One of the new riders, Deb, in looking at her stats for the ride, could not believe she had ridden the fastest of her times and hit a new personal record of 16 mph. This accomplishment is noteworthy – Deb and Terry just started riding about 2 months ago! One of our own at their first time up at bat also achieved a spot as one of Orlando ADA Tour de Cure’s Top Fundraiser (Deb)!!
The team also has a Red Rider: A person who rides with diabetes. – Jimmy Vasil. Jimmy’s hope is that “Someday down the road we will just get together for a ride, not for the fight against diabetes”.
After all the riders made it back to the finish line, it was time for a group photo and lunch. Lunch was provided for the event by Tijuana Flats. Champions received a special treat for lunch provided by Chroma. TeamOne is proud to have all the team members achieve Champion status this year! Chroma provided an assortment of fruits, roasted vegetables, pulled pork, and delicious bread.
Another special treat was the massages for the weary riders. Though the lines were long, many took advantage of a massage to relieve the fatigue brought on by today’s exertion (or just the luxury of a massage in itself).
A lot of visiting with new friends and old, the celebration of a huge accomplishment of the day’s ride, and enjoying a warm (humid-free) day in Lake Nona, FL topped off the day.
