The Tour de Garden, held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, ushered in a beautiful day of cycling camaraderie and community spirit in Winter Garden, Florida. As with most mass rides in the Sunshine State, the day began early, with enthusiastic participants arriving between 6:30 and 7:00 AM. With broken clouds dotting the sky and a temperature of 76°F that felt a bit warmer due to the humidity hovering at 98%, it was a perfect day for cycling.

TeamOne members Dawn, Shawn, and Z quickly found prime parking and gathered to prepare for their 37-mile adventure. In their characteristic style, they opted to wear the TeamOne Taino Jersey, ready for a relaxed launch, allowing the crowd of riders to surge ahead while they savored the peaceful beginning of their journey, free from the hustle and bustle of an immediate start.

As the ride kicked off, the anticipation was palpable at Veterans Memorial Park. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as TeamOne prepared to tackle the colorful streets of Winter Garden, energized by the sounds of cheering from locals. Their spirits soared, fueled not only by the thrill of the ride but also by the knowledge that this event benefited the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, a vital institution dedicated to bridging cultures and educating students in a myriad of disciplines for over a century. The team’s resolve was strengthened by this meaningful cause, motivating them to give their all on this picturesque course.

Upon diving into downtown Winter Garden, the riders were treated to smooth, newly paved roads that complemented their steady 17 mph pace. As they rode, they encountered other cheerful cyclists, sharing smiles and encouragement along the way. The day unfolded under stunning weather conditions, marked by a pleasant chill and an overcast sky that kept the heat at bay. By the time they rolled out of the first SAG station at approximately the 20-mile mark, they had formed a unified group once again, collectively pushing forward with just 16 more miles ahead.

As the morning turned into afternoon, the heat began to rise, creating a palpable humidity that clung to their skin and intensified the experience. Broken clouds provided intermittent relief from the blazing sun, but even so, the temperature peaked at 88°F, feeling much hotter with the humidity pushing it to a sweltering 101°F. The gentle wind at 4 mph blowing in from the SSW offered little respite; instead, it felt like a warm embrace of summer, urging them to pedal harder and push through the sticky conditions. Yet amidst the discomfort, a sense of unity grew stronger among TeamOne, as they cheered each other on, reminding themselves that this shared adventure—both exhilarating and challenging—was what made the day truly special.

The course transformed into a mini-iteration of the infamous Horrible Hundred, challenging participants with a series of undulating hills that rigorously tested their stamina and willpower. While the absence of the dreaded climb of Sugarloaf was a relief, the relentless uphill stretches still managed to sap their energy. Yet, instead of succumbing to fatigue, the team embraced the challenges with remarkable resilience and an unwavering spirit of camaraderie. Each uphill battle became a collective effort, as laughter echoed through the hills and words of encouragement spurred everyone forward. This sense of unity turned a laborious pace into an enjoyable journey, making the effort feel less like a struggle and more like a shared adventure among friends.

The Tour de Garden experience was a resounding success, leaving participants with cherished memories that transcended the physical challenges of the day. Each hill conquered and each moment of shared laughter served to strengthen the bonds among the team, cultivating a powerful sense of community. As the riders navigated the course, it became clear that the beauty of the day lay not just in the miles biked, but in the stories created along the way—shared victories, friendly rivalries, and the simple joy of being outdoors together. By the end of the day, everyone emerged not only as accomplished riders but as a tight-knit community, enriched by the experience and eager for the next adventure. The Tour de Garden was more than just a bike ride; it was a celebration of resilience, connection, and the sheer joy of movement.
