March 30, 2025, marks the 10th consecutive year TeamOne is the “Team of Champions” as they participate in the 20th anniversary of the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure in Orlando, the best charity cycling event of the year in Lake Nona, Florida.

The day begins early for the participants and volunteers in the Tour de Cure. This year, an extra element was added to the equation because the weather conditions predicted heavy rains and a storm on the horizon, which added to the anticipation. Everyone was hoping to make it back before the rain started. The ADA decided to modify some routes and removed the century (100 mi) in anticipation of the rain in the afternoon. The new routes available were a Family Route (6.7 mi), Half Metric Century (33.5 mi), and a 47.5-mile route, which replaced the metric century (69 mi).

The weather at 6 am was 74 degrees, a steady windspeed of 9 miles per hour, and humidity at 88%. Though it was 74 degrees, the humidity made it seem warmer than the temperature would dictate. Since it is Florida, the temperature shifts are somewhat significant. The temperature climbed to 81 degrees as the wind only increased to 10 miles per hour, and the humidity dropped to 66%. The wind staying steady without significant gusts is a miracle, but the drop in humidity is unheard of in Florida. The initial weather report predicted heavy rain, but if this day was not the most beautiful, mostly cloudy, it must rank in the “Top 5” type of days to ride. Mother Nature is a true cyclist!

The Ride

The mostly cloudy skies shielded the participants from the sun for the Tour de Cure event, where TeamOne was ready to showcase their spirit and camaraderie. Susie opted for the modified 6.5-mile course, while others geared up for the more demanding 33.5-mile stretch, and Jodel boldly embraced the challenge of the 47.5-mile route solo. Donning their commemorative “Team of Champions” 10th anniversary jerseys, the team members stood out on the course and created an infectious atmosphere that drew cheers and encouragement from fellow cyclists.

As TeamOne gathered for a spirited photo by the starting line, their faces shone with pride and excitement, embodying the unity and teamwork that have become synonymous with TeamOne. Amidst the diverse array of participants, one thing remained clear: their shared commitment to conquer challenges together, as the anticipation of the ride transformed into pure determination, bolstered by the heartwarming cheers of volunteers. With each rider starting according to their assigned route, the day promised an exhilarating adventure, just as invigorating as the slight breeze accompanying them along the journey.

Virtual Riders

This year, the spirit of teamwork truly was in effect during the event, even among those who could not throw their leg over a bike. Life circumstances may have kept some of our team members away from the riding portion, but they were not about to let that stop them from raising donations and becoming a Champion or being a crucial part of the event. Arriving bright and early, our dedicated champions rolled up their sleeves, proving that you do not need to pedal to contribute to a good cause. With all hands-on deck, they ensured that everything was primed for an exciting day.

As the rides started, TeamOne members set off on their respective routes, and our “non-riders” energy was contagious. They seized the opportunity to mingle, cracking jokes and sharing stories that kept everyone’s spirits high. It became a mini festival as the laughter echoed alongside the cheers for riders embarking on their journeys. The camaraderie was palpable, and each high-five and shout of encouragement served to amplify the electric atmosphere of the event. These die-hard supporters knew how to keep the motivation rolling, proving that sometimes, enthusiasm is the best fuel!

Finally, as the riders crossed the finish line, the awaited moment was met with a cheerleader-worthy reception from our enthusiastic supporters. They were ready with cameras in hand, capturing the sheer joy of accomplishment and camaraderie that permeated the air. Watching their teammates triumph on the bike was all the reward these champions needed, and their smiles reflected the event’s triumph. With participation of this caliber, both from those riding and those cheering team members on, it was evident that the heart of TeamOne beats strong, no matter the circumstances. Who knew that the best stories could be crafted without needing to pedal!

6.5-Mile Group

As the clock struck 9:30 am, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation for the 6.5-mile ride. While attendance shifted throughout the morning, one rider stood out: Susie, the lone champion of this delightful journey. With a relaxed pace of 8 mph, she navigated the charming neighborhood, the gentle turns leading her past tree-lined streets that seemed to wave at her in welcome. The ride was not just about distance; it was a chance to bask in the day’s beauty and share cheerful conversations with fellow participants.

The organizers had crafted this event as a vibrant yet leisurely experience, ensuring that fun trumped speed. Reveling in her surroundings, Susie felt the exhilaration of being part of something bigger than herself. With the streets blissfully calm, she rode easily, each push of the pedals whispering encouragement and adventure. Volunteers lined the route, their smiles shining brighter than the sun, and they eagerly handed out finisher medals—a delightful memento that celebrated her joyful journey.

Once the finish line was crossed, Susie’s eagerness grew as she awaited her fellow bikers tackling the 33.5 & 47.5-mile routes. The bonds forged through shared sweat and laughter transformed the event into a lively gathering, a reminder that biking is not just about the miles covered but the lovely community it builds. As she engaged with newcomers and seasoned riders alike, it was evident that for Susie, the ride was just as much about friendship as it was about the adventure on two wheels.

33.5-Mile Group

The sun stayed hidden behind the cloud cover. The five riders: Dawn, Jonathan, Kwesi, Shawn, and Z set off on their 33.5-mile adventure, the excitement palpable in the air. As they pedaled along, it was clear that this was not just a bike ride; it was a quest filled with a dash of competition and a generous helping of camaraderie. Their first checkpoint at 12.5 miles near Rummel Road gave them the perfect excuse to catch their breath and swap stories. With laughter echoing around them, they delightfully debated who would claim the coveted title of “Most Motivated Rider” by the end of the day. Little did they know, the real test was beginning.

With the wind trying its best to knock them off course, the riders enjoyed the ride far more than expected. It was as if Mother Nature had decided to join their little party, blowing straight into their faces like a thousand tiny gnomes heckling them to turn around. But instead of succumbing to defeat, they rose to the occasion, each mile a testament to their grit and determination. The arduous wind transformed from an unwelcome adversary to a mighty teacher, as they laughed their way through the challenge, pushing through with every ounce of teamwork they could muster. But just when they thought they hit a wall, the wind became their greatest supporter, no longer resisting but lending a friendly shove for the following 14 miles. The thrill of riding faster now had them grinning ear to ear, the finish line growing closer with every pedal stroke.

As they crossed the finish line, the feeling of elation was electric! For a group that had not signed up for a strict training regimen, Netflix integration counts as strength training, right? They could not help but burst with pride. Standing proudly with medals hanging around their necks, they marched to the Champions tent, ready to reminisce about their “great journey” over some much-needed grub. The 10 & 47.5-mile riders were already settled, booting up the communal vibe, ready to share in the post-ride applause and enjoy a communal feast. As they recounted snippets of their ride filled with laughter and playful jabs at each other’s riding styles, it was clear that this ride was more than just a physical challenge; it was a celebration of friendship, memories made, and stories that would be told for years to come! 🙂

47.5-Mile Group

Jodel, the lone wolf of TeamOne, kicked off the 47-mile adventure with all the flair of a seasoned pro. As he pedaled into the fierce headwind, which seemed to have a personal vendetta against him, he could not help but think of the sweet relief waiting just beyond the 21-mile mark. Clocking in an impressive average of 16 mph in such challenging conditions, he channeled his inner superhero, fully aware that the wind would soon become his new best friend on this joyous adventure. But little did he know, the road ahead would throw some curveballs that would test his stamina and his sense of humor.

At mile 23, just as Jodel’s legs began to feel like spaghetti, the wind shifted, and for a glorious moment, he felt as if he could fly. But destiny has a funny way of playing with bikers. When he reached the 43-mile mark, the headwind roared back, more stubborn than a toddler refusing to leave a candy store. With the last stretch looming ahead and energy levels dipping dangerously low, the previous 4 miles transformed into a rollercoaster of grit and gasps as he pushed through. It is said that laughter is the best fuel, so he conjured up images of his future self, celebrating with a giant slice of pizza, if only he could cross that finish line.

As Jodel finally approached the home stretch, the sight of his fellow TeamOne members, who had ridden the 6.5-mile course and even the virtual riders, ignited a fire within him. Cheers and friendly banter filled the air as he mustered his final reserves, crossing the finish line just in the nick of time. With sweat trickling down his brow and a huge grin plastered on his face, he realized that while the ride may have been a test of physical endurance, the real victory was the camaraderie and laughter shared at the end. After all, who needs a smooth ride when you have a great team to celebrate with?

Special Call Out

It is essential to spotlight a few remarkable individuals who, despite not physically being at the event, still left a significant mark on the cause. We would be remiss not to mention Ashlynn Stead, Bob Fecteau, Christina Steele, and Jade Simon, our honorary Champions! Life may have thrown a few curveballs their way, but they hit it out of the park by rallying support and raising donations that made a difference. Thanks to the generous contribution from Carolina Dill, the team surpassed their original fundraising goal of $15,000. Their commitment proves that advocacy is not just about being on-site with a flashy bike; it also involves rallying your community from afar, all while sporting a virtual smile.

Let us not forget the dynamic duo of Pamela Pierce (extraordinaire supporter) and Susan Wenzel (our Professional Photographer), who arrived with bells on and stayed until we were gently urged to leave. Their unwavering presence from the event’s kickoff to the grand finale, they kept our spirits high and transformed our gathering into an unforgettable experience. They embodied the essence of community spirit with humor, enthusiasm, and maybe a few shenanigans. This blend of passion and camaraderie fuels our mission and ensures we keep pedaling forward!
