Yvette Sanborn, of David’s World of Cycle (DWC), and special guests hosted an Evening of Ladies Cycling. This event took place on Thursday, September 26, 2019, in College Park, FL.

Special guests included Courtney Burke from Trek, along with Dr. Tiffany Wallace, a local orthopedics specialist, representatives from the ADA Tour de Cure Lake Nona and Camp Boggy Creek Ride.

The Ride

The evening started with a social ride for the cyclists. As a casual ride, the group toured the College Park area, enjoying the simple luxury of visiting while enjoying fresh air and greenery in the quaint suburb.

Even though the ride was short, it was fun. All the ladies agreed this was a perfect way to spend an evening. Taking a break from the everyday work week was not something many could take advantage of, so Yvette’s invitation gave the group a welcome opportunity.

After the ride, refreshments were waiting at David’s World – College Park. The fare included sandwich wraps, fruits, and veggies tray.  Food, drinks, and conversation occupied the moments before guest speakers were on!

Special Guests

The first speaker of the evening was Courtney Burke. Courtney, representing Trek as the Retail Marketing Programs Manager, Riding and Health Advocate,  and granddaughter of the founder of Trek, talked about how Trek was founded. She gave an overview of the programs that Trek has partnered with to help get communities active. These included NICA, World bicycle relief, Dream bikes, MACC Fund, and People for bikes. Trek’s mission, and these groups’ mission: get more people on bikes, including women and kids. Courtney’s special message: we think we can only do this little bit, but when we push we find we can actually do three times that.

Dr. Tiffany Wallace,  an Orthopedics specialist talked about fitness and stretching as a part of that. The least aggressive exercise is swimming; cycling is second. That was great news for the cyclists attending. She talked about what good stretches were for both warmup and post-ride mobility. Some of these were shoulder rolls, shoulder trap stretch: up and down movement of the shoulders (and also great for desk jockeys), a simple neck stretch (side tilt of the head, look to the side and down then reach down with the arm on that side, a leg stretch, and hip flexor stretches. The recommendation was to do each for 20-30 seconds each after a ride.

The ADA Tour de Cure Lake Nona had a special table set up with great information about the upcoming ride in March 2020. Along with the ride information, they had an array of information about diabetes and the ways people are making a difference in fighting this disease. They were invited to give a few words about the ride and how activity makes a difference in keeping people healthier.

Representatives from Camp Boggy Creek Ride shared the incredible story of how this organization was started by Paul Newman and General Norman Swartzkopf. This organization serves the community, giving special needs children an opportunity to enjoy summer at camp without focusing on any illness. Children receive the gift of a summer of fun. Family retreats are held in the spring and the fall. These camps and retreats are offered at no cost to the families. The upcoming Camp Boggy Creek 9th Annual Challenge Ride on November 9, 2019, will be a fundraising event to cover costs for these families. The ride offers 20, 40, 60-mile routes; and a 15 mile off-road/family ride.

The night closed out with special raffle drawings for David’s World Caps, Trek Caps, and The Trek Brand Story (only available to employees).

It was a great evening of fun, food, and camaraderie. Special thanks to Yvette and Courtney for inspiring everyone to continue their paths toward fitness and health.
