The Trail
The trail features miles of shaded nature for walking, biking or rollerblading. Along the way, there is a fitness course for those more active. Pets are allowed only when leashed. NO motorized vehicles allowed unless for maintenance purposes.
The Auburndale TECO Trail is a 6.5-mile (10.5 km) multi-use path in Auburndale, Florida, United States. The southern terminus of the trail is at Denton Avenue, just east of Berkley Road and directly south of the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. At the northern terminus, the trail joins the General James A. Van Fleet State Trail in Polk City. Plentiful parking is available at both trailheads. The route is almost completely flat, with an ascent of less than 5 feet (1.5 m). The trail is approximately 12 feet (3.7 m) wide and, like the Van Fleet Trail, it was constructed on an abandoned Seaboard Air Line Railroad corridor. The path is maintained by Polk County in cooperation with TECO Energy. The trail is sometimes referred to as the Van Fleet Trail extension. Future plans include connecting the trail to the Hilochee Wildlife Management area.
The Town
Auburndale is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,032 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S Census estimates of 2005, the city had a population of 12,381. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Auburndale was founded in 1880 by Frank Fuller seeking refuge from chilly winters in the Northeast United States. The place was originally named Sanatoria, from a hotel located there. When the railroad arrived, it was renamed Auburndale at the suggestion of settlers from Auburndale, Massachusetts, which itself took its name from the opening line of the poem The Deserted Village by Oliver Goldsmith. Early on, the city became a refuge for many of America’s most prominent artists.
