December 8, 2016 – This was a great day to join Team Red Riders for one of their training rides. This team is made up of Red Riders – riders who ride with Diabetes.  We all rode to train for the upcoming ADA Tour de Cure in Orlando.

TeamOne (Diana, Jodel, and Z) participated to show support for the Red Riders. Once again, it was a beautiful ride on the West Orange Trail. We chose the route with hills (it is Florida, so hills are relative).

The Ride

This trail is paved and wide. Much better than just a sidewalk. Even though we had to share the trail with other bikes,  pedestrians, skateboarders, and runners, there was plenty of room. The day was overcast. With temperatures in the mid-70’s, a slight breeze, and only the threat of sprinkles, this proved to be fantastic conditions to ride in.

Heather Nagy, the main coordinator of this team of Red Riders, made sure we had plenty of cookies, brownies, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at the end of the ride. She brings these homemade delicious treats (and diabetes-friendly) every training ride so far. You can’t imagine how great they are – but there is another training ride in January you can join to experience first-hand (https://teamonecycle.com/events-calendar/events/ada-training-ride-02/)

There were riders of many different levels. That didn’t matter. The love of riding and the conviction of supporting this worthy cause brought everyone together. It was so inspiring to ride with those who struggle with diabetes. These training rides not only prepare the team to participate next spring, they also serve to motivate riders to do better! Better in perhaps riding, “fun”raising, or just participating more often.

The TeamOne members successfully completed the training ride together as One!

Days End

After the ride, the team enjoyed early dinner at a local Thai restaurant in Winter Garden. Thai Blossom Restaurant offered a large selection of choices. This time the group enjoyed fried potstickers, sa-tae chicken, fried rice, Hawaiian beef, and teriyaki beef. The sweet ending of coconut ice cream and sticky rice completed the day on a high note. What a way to end the ride!
