The Ride

It was a great day to go on a casual ride with the ability to chat while riding together, and this was the first time I did not lead an entire ride.  I have always been the one to assist in the pulling position but today I was able to just be a rider. A big thank you goes out to Lee for pulling the entire group.

Just as in previous years … one of the many highlights of the day was after the ride was over. The volunteers and staff handed out cool, damp Tour de Cure towels to freshen up prior to breakfast.

Presenters

One speaker after the other provided their personal experience as to why they support the American Diabetes Association in Orlando. Each of these speakers commanded attention in their commentary and were very personable with their lighthearted comedic statements sprinkled throughout their conversation with the audience.

After the Keynote speakers finished their personal commentary, and the meeting was over, I think all in attendance were reinvigorated to go out and do all they can to assist in this cause.

Keynote Speakers

Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis and USTA National Campus

As Chief Executive of Community Tennis for the USTA, Kurt Kamperman leads the USTA’s efforts to increase participation in the U.S., and in recent years he has played a major role in overseeing the USTA’s 10 and Under Tennis initiative. He was a Director at Large on the USTA Board of Directors from January to April 2003 prior to accepting the full-time position.

Active in the tennis industry for more than 30 years, Kurt’s expertise spans a broad spectrum of tennis and business fields. He has served as tournament director for a number of nationally televised tennis events, and as president of Stan Smith Design, he designed numerous world-class tennis facilities. As a tennis management and marketing consultant, Kurt has worked with dozens of top clubs, resorts and companies to increase revenue and improve the bottom line.

Betsy Hughes, Co-Owner, Track Shack

Having been an avid runner since age 14, she always knew she wanted to work in sports. More than 30 years ago Betsy had to declare a major at UF, knowing she wasn’t going to wear a suit or heels to work each day. Her joys were writing and loved working with people so deciding on a journalism/public relations degree just made sense. While working part-time at Track Shack back in the late 70’s, early 80’s, it never occurred to Betsy that Jon, the love of her life (then and now) and her would one day own and “run” one the most successful running specialty, event marketing and management companies in the US.

Betsy and Jon surrounded themselves with an amazing staff, raised two wonderful children, Emma and Chris, and are involved daily in the Central Florida community. Still, a favorite part of each day, after my morning run, is chatting, encouraging and helping her customers and friends be fit, healthy and lead a positive lifestyle. Their business is selling shoes, but their passion is people.

Daryl Tol, President & CEO, Florida Hospital & Central Division Adventist Health System

As president and CEO of the Central Florida Region, Tol oversees more than 19,500 employees. He began his career in medical group management in Oregon, and since receiving his first administrator appointment at Florida Hospital Flagler in 2001 has led multiple hospitals as CEO. Tol also led Adventist Health System’s East Florida Region, which includes five hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties.

Tol has chaired chambers of commerce, the CEO Business Alliance, and Team Volusia Economic Development Corporation. He looks forward to active involvement in the Central Florida community.

Tol, his wife Stacey and their three children are active in their church, and enjoy outdoor activities and traveling.
