On Friday morning September 27, 2019, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Tour de Cure Executive Committee hosted the Executive Ride and Breakfast to introduce the ADA’s annual Tour de Cure at Lake Nona to business leaders in the community. Today Diana, Shawn, and Z were the representatives for TeamOne.

The annual Tour de Cure, which welcomes over 2,000 attendees, raised over $1.1M in the 2019 event earlier in March. In preparation for the 2020 event, the Executive Ride and Breakfast, held at the Human Performance Institute in Lake Nona (https://www.humanperformanceinstitute.com) allowed business leaders to learn more about the ADA and the growing health and financial impacts of diabetes. With over 30 million Americans living with diabetes, and healthcare costs exceeding $245 billion along with $58 billion lost in annual productivity, there is no better time to get involved with this incredible organization.

This annual invitation-only event gathers executive participants together to enjoy a social ride, network, and understand and share the reasons why this event holds so much value for the local community.

The Ride

It was a great day to enjoy a casual bicycle ride. Friday’s weather was a crisp 70-ish degrees with clear skies and relatively little humidity. The casual ride let everyone chat while riding together. This year’s ride took participants through some of the scenic areas of Lake Nona, site of the annual Tour de Cure. Stops along the way included Drive Shack, Lake Nona Adventure Water Park, the state of the art Veteran’s hospital, and the USTA center.

After the ride, the volunteers and staff handed out cool, damp towels for riders to freshen up. Next on the agenda was for riders and invitees gathered together for a delicious breakfast of eggs, bacon, potatoes, fruit, toast, coffee, and juice hosted by the Human Performance Institute.

Immediately following breakfast was the line-up of special guests sharing their stories.

Opening Remarks

Yvette Sanborn, a local community leader, and a business owner provided some background on the upcoming ADA Tour de Cure and introduced the lineup of special guests.

The Lake Nona tour de cure is the 2nd largest tour in the nation. Last year this event raised over $900M to fight diabetes. This year the goal is $1.3M.

Yvette and her family have been personally touched by diabetes. Her husband and business partner, David Sanborn of David’s World Cycles, have made it their personal mission to bring health awareness to the community.

Keynote Speakers

Yvette stated that each Keynote speaker has a personal connection to health awareness as well as the fight against diabetes.

Dr. Richard Pratley

Director advent health started researching in 1990. He has seen growth and now oversees 10 faculty, with 30 trials at any given time. He shared how just last week there was a newly approved drug last week that the medical industry is hopeful will help combat diabetes. The money raised in the ADA’s Tour de Cure goes to support the important research going on to cure diabetes.

As a member of the American Diabetes Association, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and The Obesity Society, Dr. Pratley continues his active involvement in the professional community. The Henry Christian Award for Excellence in Clinical Research from the American Federation for Clinical Research Foundation was awarded in recognition of his work.

He regularly presents at national and international meetings, has written over 160 peer-reviewed articles and is a Principal Investigator for both NIH and pharmaceutical company-sponsored trials in diabetes. He is on the editorial boards of Lancet: Diabetes and Endocrinology and the Journal of Diabetes and Complications and acts as an ad hoc reviewer for many journals, including Diabetes Care and Diabetes.

Courtney Burke

Representing Trek as the Retail marketing programs manager and granddaughter of the founder of Trek, demonstrated how businesses can be successful in supporting change for a healthier life. Her theme: “Riding towards a healthier life”.

While Trek may have started in a small red barn in Waterloo, Wisconsin, it has grown and now resides in a large headquarter facility not far from the barn. She shared how 10 years ago 3 major life-changing illnesses for employees at the company prompted a shift. The company implemented new ideas in encouraging health among its employees. It didn’t just passively do this.

Some of the great things this company put in place were reduced premiums for employees taking a health risk assessment; stocking the cafe with healthy food that was no longer the expensive option against junk food’s low prices; professional coaching to help employees quit smoking, eat more nutritiously, and more; providing great spaces to workout both inside and outside; and a list of many other things. They saw tangible results in no increased in their healthcare, tobacco usage went down over the 10 year period from 22% to less than 1% and a host of others. Her message: “Everyone attending has the ability to change lives.”

Nick Propper

A performance coach from Johnson & Johnson Human Performace Institute (HPI). Their mission, built on 4 major components, HPI strives to help companies achieve wellness in the workplace. He broke these down: focus on your purpose through self-care, physical energy capacity, emotional energy capacity, and mental energy capacity. “If people aren’t growing personally, will be hard for them to grow professionally and even harder to grow your business.” These words are something anyone can understand.

Nick brings unparalleled, research-backed training in the areas of Resilience and Energy Management to his employees and clients. Nick has worked for Emanate, Ketchum of London and Marks & Spencer. He is also an accomplished sportsman, played Rugby in university before going on to compete in several triathlons and Ironman distance multisport events. Nick is also a trustee of Tri For Life, a UK based charity triathlon event.

Rowdy Gaines

A 3-time Olympic champion and Vice President of Central FL YMCA was the last Keynote Speaker. Rowdy shared how diabetes has affected his family personally. The research done gives him hope that a cure can be found. Rowdy related this to his own career as an athlete. With Dedication and teamwork, he was able to make it to the Olympics and go on to win 3 Olympic medals.

His life has shown him that it’s easy to be dedicated in good times. But champions are the ones that are dedicated good times and bad; champions live through the valleys. He tied this to the adversity faced in diabetes, peaks with medications and research continue. But with teamwork and perseverance, a cure can be found.

He closed out by sharing how “We can all do this together”. The education provided by the ADA for healthier lifestyles, with something as simple as 30 minutes a day of activity, is another way the ADA continues to contribute to help fight diabetes.

Call to Action

Yvette closed out the event with a call to action: Everyone can make a difference in one of several ways: become a Corporate Sponsor, Start a Team, Join a Team, or Donate. “Together we can make a difference and win the war against diabetes”.
