If you are following my journey, you may wonder why I felt the need to upgrade my beloved 2014 Trek Domane 6.9 Project One Team Bontrager Issue (Image Above) bicycle after recently acquiring the 2024 Trek Madone SL7 Gen 7 (Specs).

At first glance, it might seem illogical to invest further in a bike that had already served me well for nearly a decade, especially given the impressive features and capabilities of the new Madone. However, the emotional connection I have with the Domane, along with its unique characteristics suitable for endurance rides, pushed me to explore ways to enhance its performance. My affection for that bike is rooted in countless adventures, memorable rides, and the times it carried me through challenging terrain.

Initially, I thought of the new Madone as a complete replacement, but as I pondered its integration into my cycling lifestyle, I realized that the Domane still had a place in my heart and in my collection. Upgrading it would not only breathe new life into a trusted companion but also allow me to experiment with the latest components and technology that have advanced since its launch. While the financial aspect of the upgrade didn’t seem to align with conventional wisdom, cycling is not just about numbers on a spreadsheet; it’s about experiences, joy, and personal growth. Every ride on the Domane will now feel a little different, a blend of nostalgia and newfound excitement, as it evolves alongside my journey.

The Why

Upgrading my original mechanical SRAM Force 22 groupset to an electronic setup with a crank-mounted power meter was a goal I had set for myself. The intention behind this upgrade was to enhance not only the performance of my bike but also my cycling experience as a whole. Instead of relying on a wearable power meter, which can sometimes be less accurate and less convenient, I envisioned a more integrated solution that would bring precision to my training and riding. With a steadfast belief in my plan and a refusal to give up, I tackled the project head-on.

Bringing my vision to fruition involved careful planning and numerous hours spent researching components and compatibility. Now, as I take my newly upgraded Domane out on long endurance rides, I truly appreciate the seamless shifts and the data feedback provided by the power meter. It delivers a level of insight that transforms my training regimen, allowing me to push my limits more effectively. The satisfaction of completing this project is profound, especially knowing that every cyclist deserves the joy of having multiple bicycles ready for different types of rides.

With both my Domane and Madone in my arsenal, I’ve truly discovered the joy of cycling in all its forms. The endurance focused Domane is perfect for long, scenic rides, while the sleek Madone gives me that exhilarating speed rush on the open road. This dynamic duo keeps my passion for cycling thriving and allows me to enjoy every ride, whether I’m chasing personal bests or simply soaking in the scenery. I’m excited to share my journey and inspire fellow cycling enthusiasts to embrace the thrill of both endurance and speed!

The Who

I chose the SRAM Red AXS 2/12 with the QUAD power meter for my groupset because it exemplifies effortless performance and precision engineering. The transition was seamless, as it integrates flawlessly with my existing SRAM setup—simply a matter of unbolting one groupset and replacing it with another. SRAM has refined every element of the original eTap Red groupset, enhancing the entire riding experience. With one-finger braking that feels intuitive and unencumbered and front shifting that’s smoother than ever, the revamped design offers a level of precision that makes cycling feel almost poetic. The fully wireless connectivity is a game-changer, allowing me to enjoy the ride without the usual clutter of cables while also expanding my gearing choices to accommodate any terrain.

What truly sets this groupset apart, however, is the attention to detail in every feature they’ve incorporated. The QUAD power meter delivers accurate and reliable power measurements, critical for performance-oriented rides. Coupled with innovative new shift points, SRAM has ensured that each gear change is fluid and responsive, allowing for instantaneous feedback as I navigate my favorite routes. Impressively, while enhancing functionality, they also managed to shave grams off each component, allowing the RED groupset to stand as the lightest electronic offering on the market. While the act of riding itself can be challenging, the operations of the SRAM RED groupset are a joy, transforming my cycling experience into a more enjoyable. Though riding at my level isn’t effortless for me but operations of the RED groupset is.

Was It Worth It

The short answer is a resounding “YES!” After over 14 years of loyalty to TREK, I can confidently say that my recent upgrade to the Domane has completely transformed my cycling experience. The performance of this bike is simply outstanding! It effortlessly hangs with, if not outperforms, my new Madone and any other bicycles currently cruising the streets. Riding the Domane feels like gliding on air; its smoothness in both riding and shifting is nothing short of remarkable. The only limitation in this equation is my own physical condition, but that only reinforces my deep appreciation for this incredible machine.

The only con I face now is the delightful dilemma of choosing which bike to ride on any given day! It’s a fortunate position to be in, to have such high-quality options at my disposal. Each ride offers a unique experience and tapping into those different capabilities only heightens my enjoyment. Looking ahead, I’m excited about my upcoming project, upgrading my current Stages single reading power meter on the Madone to the new Shimano power meter, which tracks separate left and right readings. This will undeniably enhance my performance metrics and overall training regimen. Stay tuned for updates as I dive into this latest endeavor!
