Saturday morning on December 17, 2016, TeamOne members (Diana & Z) joined other cyclists for the Peloton Cyclist Club (PCC) Ride #5. Never ones to miss an opportunity to train for the upcoming ADA Tour de Cure with a large group, the cyclists made the trek out to DeLand, Florida this time.

PCC (http://pelotoncyclistclub.com) is a fun and unique company that has set out to unite the cycling community. TeamOne members joined in for 36 miles of beautiful riding through DeLand.

All PCC rides are fully supported with mechanical and nutritional support before, during, and after the events. PCC has designated fully stocked SAG stops along the route to meet every rider’s need.

The Ride

The morning was once again one with an 5:30 am (early) start. The drive to DeLand demanded an early wake-up. A quick look at the weather app revealed a chilly morning of 54 degrees. After driving the distance from Orland, the TeamOne members got ready to ride. The day was going to be off to a great start since PCC had things set up bagels, juice, and hot coffee — a perfect beginning on such a chilly morning.

Today’s ride was also an opportunity for PCC Club Member to try out Zipp wheels on Zipp Demo Day in conjunction with the ride. It was heard that these wheels were fast and made the ride just that much more fun for those that took advantage to take them out for a test drive

Course choices today were either 36 miles or 60 miles. The 60-mile course had 2 groups: one at 25+mph (and yes, they were fast!!) and another at 20+ mph (yea…that is still fast!!). The speeders did not need a ride leader because most of them were part of the JC Bicycle team, the second group was lead by Tracey Draper and Paul Ricci.   The 36-mile course was only 1 group at 17+mph (a brisk but enjoyable pace) led by David Dodd. The groups started out on time, braced for a chilly start, knowing that 80 degrees would soon be on its way.

About 3 miles into the ride David’s Gramin was not cooperating with directions so he let Z take the pull position of the group for 10+ miles.  At 14 miles into the ride, there was the first SAG stop. Just before the railroad tracks was the welcome site of the PCC Tent.  Snacks and hydration stood ready. Eric and his team set out a great spread of pretzels, bananas, trail mix, snack bars, cookies, water, Gatorade, and soda. With such a variety of choices, hunger was kept at bay.

After the SAG stop, the TeamOne riders started back for the last 20-ish miles with Diana now pulling about +12 miles for the group.  The unforgiving wind slapped the riders right in the face. In this situation, you just have to keep on pedaling as they knew all too well.  What helped the group and made the ride easier was David, Henry, and Z taking turns at being road guards and stopping traffic at the intersections.  This didn’t allow vehicles to cut off the riders and allowed all of them to continue through the intersections in a peloton.  There were a few slight inclines back to back today. Those slight hills coupled with the wind made for a challenging ride but a fun ride. Oh, and those 25+ riders…yea, they were fast! They made it back soon after the 36-milers.

After the ride, food waited for hungry cyclists. Today’s menu included beef, chicken, rice and beans — a burrito bowl. Delicious!! Can’t wait for the next ride.

As always, PCC made sure cyclists had a great day!! Check out what they have to offer at their website: http://pelotoncyclistclub.com
